Musical Selections

One of the best things about playing music is the relationship you build as you meet new musicians and singers and share in their own personal expressions of their craft. Most people I have played with are amateurs like me but some are professional song writers/singers/musicians. However, I have learned something from each of them. Some are deceased but the living are still affected by their influence. Each had a way of telling their story and punctuating it differently. The favorite part of my job is trying to understand their personal view and trying to help them tell it in their own way, with sort of an "amen" back-up. They are trying to deliver a message or sometimes just creating a mood. Most of the music was never recorded and has subsequently "gone with the wind". When Larry ask me to put this list together I reached back in my mind for the ones we did capture and picked several that I enjoyed. I hope that you find something in this eclectic mix that you will enjoy.

Joanne
Written by Michael Nesmith of the Monkees, done here by my friend John Talley, singer/musician/songwriter. John called me one day and said he had written a song that needed some banjo in it. I had always admired John’s work and we got together and had so much fun that we've played steady for about three years in restaurants and pubs and front porches. Very talented friend. John Talley - Vocals and Guitar, Mike Adams - Banjo.

Manhattan Island Serenade
Written by Leon Russell. This was a live recording at "The Big Chill" in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Sung by the late Rick (Uncle Rick) Dicus. He was a wonderful friend and I still miss him and his music. Rick Dicus - Vocals and Guitar, John Talley - Guitar and Harmonica, Mark Neito (Levon Walkin’) - Guitar, Jennifer Evans - Vocals, Mike Adams - Banjo.

The Weight
This song was written by Robbie Robertson of "The Band" and is the first song on their "Music from Big Pink" album. This is also a live recording at the "Big Chill"(Feb 2008, I think). To me, the ambient sounds of the crowd in a live recording actually adds to the mystique of the occasion. It was a thrill for me to be included in this group of musicians. They come in and out with their unique expressions as they are inspired by the music. The result is a mulligan, reminiscent of an Irish Pub where friends meet for Craic (Fun) and Porter Black (Dark Guinness). I am so glad Rick had this session recorded. Since he has passed, it has become a poignant remembrance. Sung here by the late Rick Dicus - guitar and vocals, John Talley - guitar and harmonica and vocals, Jennifer Evans - vocals, Erica Jones - vocals, Mark Neito (Levon Walkin’) - guitar, Greg Batterton - harmonica, Mike Adams - banjo.
We drink to your coffin.
May it be built from the wood of a hundred year old oak tree
that I shall plant tomorrow.
